Montecito, California

The Mediterranean climate of Montecito, nine square miles squeezed between the Pacific Ocean and mountains just east of Santa Barbara, long has been a bug light for affluent retirees. Those 65 and up comprise 22% of the 9,000 residents. Average home price is $1.7 million; median household income is $110,000. South-facing beaches mean the sun rises and sets over the water. It’s sometimes hard to distinguish between residents and those who simply have a second home there. The town has come a long way since the 19th century when it was known more for highway robbers
